About me
Dana Whitfield, thirty-nine. Rock guide, Squamish local, two hundred gondola days a year.
I came to Squamish for a summer of climbing in my mid-twenties and never left. Fourteen years later I guide on the Chief and the surrounding granite — multi-pitch days, skills courses, and the occasional very nervous first-timer who turns out to be braver than they thought.
The gondola is my commute on the days I work the upper terrain, and my office window the rest of the time. I have ridden it in outflow so clear you could count boats, and in inflow so thick the cabin windows went white at tower two. Both of those days taught me more about selling people a view than any brochure.
I write these notes because visitors keep asking the same questions at the base: is it worth it today, when should we go, what is actually up there. The honest answers depend on the sky, so that is where I start.
I am not employed by the gondola and I take nothing from them. If that changes, it will say so here.
